On 3rd October 1962, the Speedmaster CK 2998 made its debut in space, donned by astronaut Walter Schirra on the Sigma 7 mission of the Mercury program. The new model pays homage to its groundbreaking predecessor, embodying the updated 2nd generation Speedmaster look in a contemporary design.
Crafted from polished and brushed stainless steel, the 39.70 mm case of this watch boasts a sleek "flat links" bracelet with OMEGA's patented comfort release adjustment system. The black aluminium bezel ring hosts the iconic tachymeter scale, complete with the "Dot Over Ninety" emblem.
The grey-blue dial of this watch showcases a CVD coating, replicating the tone of the CK 2998 watches from the 1960s. The indexes and hour/minute "Alpha" hands are embellished with vintage Super-LumiNova, while the central seconds "Baton" hand is white-varnished to match the markings. The subdials feature a 30-minute recorder at 3 o'clock, a 12-hour recorder at 6 o'clock, and a small-seconds display at 9 o'clock.
The watch's dial and crown showcase the classic OMEGA logo, with a caseback adorned with the iconic Seahorse medallion as well as engravings of "THE FIRST OMEGA IN SPACE" and "OCTOBER 3, 1962."
The timepiece is powered by the Co-Axial Master Chronometer Calibre 3861, the latest iteration of the Calibre 321 used by astronauts in space. Every watch is presented in a unique box and includes a leaflet titled "LEGENDARY MOONWATCH."
